This Monday, 22 December, GOB Menorca held the organisation’s Annual Assembly, a meeting devoted to reviewing the year 2025 and setting out the work perspectives for 2026.
After deducting voluntary withdrawals and cancellations due to non-payment, the number of members of GOB Menorca has reached 1,669. Throughout the year, an average of 1.8 new memberships per week were recorded, a positive trend that has characterised recent years. Another relevant indicator of GOB Menorca’s social activity is the management of the organisation’s social media channels, which have seen an overall increase of 3,150 followers during 2025.
Direct services to the population and to the environment have been maintained and, in many cases, improved. This is the case of Es Viver native plant garden centre facilities, which are subject to an investment and improvement plan that will continue in 2026. It is also the case of the Wildlife Recovery Centre in Ciutadella, jointly managed with COFIB (Consortium for the Protection of Wildlife in the Balearic Islands), which has attended to 1,459 animals from 83 different species.
The 212 activities of the GOB Environmental Education Service reached more than 2,000 children, in addition to the 115 children and young people who took part in educational leisure activities such as hiking and summer camps. Volunteering is also in good health, with 243 people holding an active volunteer agreement with one of the areas of activity of GOB Menorca.
One of the major strategic projects of this period is the promotion of the Alliance for an Agroecological Menorca, within the framework of a Living Lab financed through the European Union’s Horizon 2030 programme. GOB Menorca is part of several international networks working to promote agricultural activities with quality food and the recovery of environmental values. The organisation has just opened a call for economic grants for innovative agricultural holdings.
In 2025, the Via Menorca campaign continued. Although promoted by GOB, it operates with its own autonomy and a distinctive creative identity. The campaign has called for limits on tourist vehicles, created a song and an alternative imaginary to tourist overcrowding and the gentrification affecting the resident population. Attention has also been focused on the modifications to the Territorial Plan promoted by the Island Council, as well as on the serious environmental threats arising from speculative operations on rural land and water resources.
Numerous specific projects have been analysed and proposals for improvement or formal objections have been submitted. A Legal Front has been launched through an alliance with the environmental lawyers’ network RADA, in order to increase the capacity to respond to attacks on the territory and the environment.
From a financial point of view, GOB Menorca is a fully sound organisation, a very important factor that guarantees a long-term sustainable project, independent of any political or economic influence. It should be noted that in 2025 the Island Council of Menorca applied a cut of €9,500 to a package of grants that had initially been committed, as it had already done the previous year.
The Assembly noted that these reprisals do not harm the organisation nor compromise its independence, but instead affect the beneficiaries of those activities and services that will not be carried out, activities that are always coherent and collaborative with the objectives of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Agency managed by the same Island Council.
During the Assembly, some positions on the Board of Directors were renewed. The Board is made up of 24 people and will continue to be chaired by Margarida Masferrer.
