More than 100 educational centres in the Balearic Islands join GOB’s call for a fair school transport fare

The call made by GOB last week to demand fair school transport fares has already received the support of more than one hundred educational centres in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, as well as more than a dozen associations of headteachers, families and trade unions. Support has continued to grow over the past few days, highlighting the increasing scale of a problem that has affected the entire educational community for years.

The rise in transport costs for educational outings is a recurring situation every year, especially with the arrival of the tourist season, when transport companies prioritise more profitable services linked to tourism. This year, the situation has been further aggravated by the increase in fuel prices, which has pushed already high costs even higher.

GOB sections demand a fair fare for school transport

In recent years, students’ right to take part in activities outside the classroom has been facing an obstacle as unexpected as it is insurmountable: the prohibitive cost of discretionary transport services.

Far from being a luxury, school trips are fundamental pedagogical tools and form part of the comprehensive development of the educational curriculum. It must be explicitly acknowledged that these activities are part of the right to education with equal opportunities and cannot be considered optional complementary activities. In fact, for many children, these excursions represent the only opportunity to get to know their natural surroundings, as their daily lives are confined to city streets or, worse still, to the walls of their homes.

GOB children’s and youth naturalist group faces a new course full of activities.

GOB Menorca starts a new course of the naturalist group for children and young people between 7 and 15 years old, continuing an initiative that last year had an excellent reception from families and participants. The experience has shown the need and interest in offering educational and leisure spaces in contact with nature, and this year the program is reinforced with 8 monthly outings that will take place between October and May, on the third Sunday of each month.

Summer camps 2025: a shared journey through nature, science and commitment

The first steps of summer have once again been synonymous with nature, coexistence and discovery. The 2025 summer camps and trek brought together more than 90 children and young people eager to explore the territory, build friendships, grow in values and learn about the environment with a curious and critical perspective.

Look to look after: workshops to see the sea with new eyes

GOB Menorca, with the support of Menorca Preservation and the Marilles Foundation, has launched the project “Look to Look After” | “Seeing is Believing,” which aims to strengthen both the emotional and rational connection between people — especially children — and the sea. By the end of June, more than 95 students from different schools on the island are expected to have taken part in the first edition of these educational workshops.

Every spring, a group of passionate volunteers interested in agriculture and biodiversity heads out into the Menorcan countryside to monitor bioindicators on farms participating in the Custòdia Agrària (Agri-environmental Stewardship) program.

The goal? To show how sustainable farming practices benefit biodiversity—while enjoying a unique experience in nature.
