The Wildlife Recovery Centre opens its doors to the public this summer

From Wednesday, 1 July, nature lovers and those interested in Menorca’s wildlife will have the opportunity to visit the Wildlife Recovery Centre. Until 12 September, the Centre will be open to the public from Monday to Saturday, from 6 p.m. until sunset.

The Centre is located within the Pedreres de s’Hostal de Lithica, on the Camí Vell de Ciutadella, km 1. This privileged location allows visitors to enjoy an impressive natural setting while discovering the crucial work carried out to recover local wildlife.

14 June – Open day at the Menorca Wildlife Recovery Centre

The Menorca Wildlife Recovery Centre will open its doors to the public this Sunday, 14 June, for a special open day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as part of the conservation and environmental awareness activities it carries out throughout the year. The Centre operates under an agreement between GOB Menorca and the Consortium for Wildlife Recovery (COFIB), with the supervision of the Balearic Government’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Environment.

The travelling turtle

In 2011, during scientific surveys, a male freshwater turtle specimen was captured. In Menorca, these turtles live in streams and large ponds. At that time, it was found in the torrent of sa Boval, where it was released again after being marked, weighing 270 grams.

Last month, 15 years later, the same specimen was collected on the airport road. Therefore, it was located 7.5 kilometres away, in a different hydrographic basin, with the main road in between. It is unknown whether it arrived there by its own means or if it was transported by someone.

The Wildlife Recovery Centre closes 2025 with a 14.1% increase in animal admissions

Once again, the Wildlife Recovery Centre of Menorca —operating under an agreement between GOB Menorca and the Consortium for Wildlife Recovery (COFIB), under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment of the Balearic Government— presents in its 2025 Report the annual summary of the work carried out. A year full of challenges and dedication to the conservation of the island’s native fauna, concluding with 84 species admitted, 70 of which correspond to wild animals.

The total number of admitted animals increases year after year, and 2025 closed with 1,473 admissions, 14.1% more than in 2024. Of these, 1,425 were wild animals, highlighting the important work carried out at the Centre in caring for injured or vulnerable island wildlife. At the same time, educational and awareness-raising efforts have continued to promote appropriate coexistence with our environment, so that wildlife can be enjoyed with respect and care.

Menorca’s Wildlife Recovery Centre opens its doors to the public this summer

Nature and wildlife lovers in Menorca have the opportunity to visit the Menorca’s Wildlife Recovery Centre this summer. From Monday, 7 July, until 30 August, the Centre will be open to the public from Monday to Saturday, starting at 6 p.m. and until sunset.

More resources to protect Menorca’s wildlife

Menorca Preservation and GOB Menorca have signed a three-year collaboration agreement to strengthen the work dedicated to protecting the diversity of wildlife on land and at sea around the island. Much of the support will focus on implementing improvements at the Menorca Wildlife Recovery Centre (CRFSME) of COFIB (managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment) and GOB Menorca, with the aim of enhancing the quality of rescue and care services for wildlife, improving the physical recovery of animals, and ensuring their reintroduction into the natural environment with greater chances of success.

September 24th: Family Workshop on the Dangers of Invasive Species at the Wildlife Recovery Center

This Tuesday, September 24th, at 5:30 PM, the Menorca Wildlife Recovery Center will host a family workshop aimed at raising awareness about the dangers that invasive species pose to native wildlife. This activity, marking the final event in the CRFS summer program, will focus on the stories of some exotic animals currently residing at the Center’s hospital, including iguanas and American and African turtles. Through educational games, participants will learn how these animals arrived in Menorca and the risks they pose to local ecosystems.
