Summer is here, and it’s always nice to engage in activities that involve getting wet. That’s why we have found the perfect combination: cooling off in the waters of Fornells Bay and participating in one of GOB’s most important tasks, environmental education. The result is a free underwater photography activity that allows us to explore the blue world, capturing the beauty of the landscape and recognizing elements of Menorca’s marine flora and fauna.

GOB and MARE, the audiovisual competition for the conservation of the Balearic Sea, are jointly organizing a workshop to get to know a part of our coastline through a traditional image capture technique, photography. This workshop is aimed at both photography enthusiasts and those who have no experience in the discipline. The practice is done using a snorkel system, on the surface, without the need for scuba equipment.

The marine environment and environmental education areas combine to organize this workshop and highlight the importance of the marine ecosystems surrounding the island. The goal is to direct attention to the aquatic environment to build a closer relationship with the seabed. The photography workshop allows participants to open their eyes underwater and interact with the ecosystems and their habitats in a respectful and responsible manner.

The activity will take place at two different times during the summer: July and August. Both editions include a theoretical workshop on underwater photography, combined with knowledge about the marine environment, its ecosystems, habitats, and the most common species we can find underwater. The second part of the workshop will take place in Fornells Bay, known for its rich seabed and shallow bay.

But what is a shallow bay?

These areas where we will dive are sea inlets with shallow waters and significant environmental values. Due to their formation, they are sheltered areas where marine life is abundant, hosting many species. Menorca has some of the best-preserved bays in the western Mediterranean.

Finally, the schedule of the activity is as follows:

  • July: Friday 19th (theory) and Saturday 20th (practice)—fully booked!!
  • August: Friday 9th (theory) and Saturday 10th (practice)—fully booked!!

It is essential to sign up in advance for the activity by sending an email to administracio@gobmenorca.com.

And if you want to join but don’t have an underwater camera, don’t worry! We have 10 photographic equipment sets available for participants who don’t have their own.

We look forward to seeing you at the workshop!
