Menorca, our Alhambra

It has calculated the space well. It must be enough for its needs, but not excessively large so it cannot cope with the work. It will first make the spokes that radiate from the centre of the imagined circumference, and then join them with increasingly closer segments.

It has the wax in liquid form inside its abdomen and will extract it so that, when in contact with the air, it becomes an elastic, sticky and resistant material. It will build a barely visible mesh to trap insects.

But it cannot make mistakes with the dimensions. If the covered area is too small, it risks not catching enough food. If the area of the web exceeds the measurements, the spider may run out of material, weaken and die. Having the right measure is key.

Over one hundred personalities and professionals from the fields of archaeology and landscape warn the Island Council of Menorca of the serious mistake of ignoring UNESCO

More than one hundred people related to cultural heritage and its management from across the State — including professors, PhDs, members of ICOMOS, landscape experts, geographers, architects and museum directors — have signed a statement asking the Island Council of Menorca to halt a project that affects an area declared World Heritage.

This controversy arises from the intention to build a two-level roundabout at the Rafal Rubí junction, in the eastern part of the island and next to an archaeological site where, in 2013, work began but was halted due to the withdrawal of the contract. During this time, Menorca applied to be declared World Heritage because of its valuable Talayotic legacy, and UNESCO already requested that the half-built junction be removed because it constituted a very significant alteration of the landscape of one of the protected areas included in the candidacy. This request was explicitly repeated when Menorca received the World Heritage designation in September 2023.

Platges de Fornells, no water for more villas and hotels

In the development of Platges de Fornells, procedures have begun to allow the construction of 116 villas and 297 hotel beds. During the environmental assessment phase, GOB has written to the Balearic Government to warn that there is no water available in the aquifer.

This development in the north of Menorca started its procedures in 1969, when it was declared a National Tourism Interest Centre by the Francoist Ministry of Tourism. Construction began in the 1980s, and the Island Territorial Plan of 2003 redefined its configuration, as happened with many other planned tourist growths.

Custòdia Agrària grows with more organic fruit

Custòdia Agrària, GOB Menorca’s agrarian stewardship programme, expands with the incorporation of Hort de Son Trémol. Located in the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran, Hort de Son Trémol is a five-hectare orchard of fruit trees that has organic certification. It is dedicated to the cultivation of various fruit tree varieties (apple, pear, peach, plum, loquat, apricot, doughnut peach, persimmon and citrus fruits, some of them local varieties).

Since February 2024, Pere Torres has been the farmer in charge of managing Hort de Son Trémol. This small orchard is located in the welcoming setting of the Son Boter ravine, where remnants of ancient channels from the Arab period and other old infrastructures that helped irrigate the orchards (ponds, old wells) can still be seen.

With the recently created Hiking Group for the Detection of Territorial Messes (GEDET for short, in Catalan), the new Via Menorca campaign has started today with the first of the excursions planned for this winter.

Around 200 people set out to walk a route of contrasts. The preservation of the first kilometers along the Camí de Cavalls has clashed with the detection of three unprecedented damages, located in three agrotourism establishments close to each other, in the municipality of Alaior.

Citizen counterpower

Today’s political and social debate is increasingly conditioned by polarization. The unrestrained leader of the Western bloc is setting an example with exaggerations and lies. His style has reached our lands.

The new strategy is to place all opinions into only two opposing blocs, in order to try to gain legitimacy among usual followers. At this point, inventing things to feed conspiracy theories poses no problem.

We are looking for farmers willing to innovate to improve soil quality!

Menorca is part of the GOV4ALL project, which aims to promote agricultural innovation as a solution to soil fertility problems. Within this project, we are looking for 15 farms in Menorca that want to take part in the project, with the commitment to participate in an innovation process on their land for 2 years.

We invite interested people to attend the presentation meeting of this project, on December 4, at 4 p.m., in the cooking classroom of San Crispín (Av. de la Indústria 5, Alaior). The participation requirements and the possibilities of adapting the process to each farm will be explained there.
