Custòdia Agrària, GOB Menorca’s land stewardship programme, has consolidated the Visitam un lloc (We visit a farm) field visits throughout 2025. This environmental education activity is part of the programme’s social engagement area and aims to offer students of all ages a direct and experiential understanding of the key role played by the primary sector in conserving Menorca’s landscape and its biodiversity. The activity is adapted for students in early childhood, primary and secondary education, as well as post-compulsory studies, from vocational training to adult education.

Throughout this year, 42 visits have taken place at agricultural holdings in Menorca, with the participation of nearly 900 students from different schools across the island. The visits allow students to spend a morning in the countryside and gain first-hand insight into different agricultural production models, all committed to sustainable management and the preservation of Menorca’s agrarian mosaic.

Learning based on experience

During the visits, students have the opportunity to talk with the people who manage the farms, learn about the current challenges and opportunities of agriculture and livestock farming, and understand how food production is directly linked to environmental conservation. Among the main subjects addressed are:

  • The importance of ecological and sustainable management.
  • The impact of food consumption on the environment.
  • The particular characteristics of Menorca’s agrarian sector.
  • Knowledge of the island’s native breeds.

This approach helps students become aware, through direct personal experience, of the value of respectful agricultural practices and of the role that the primary sector can play in the current environmental crisis, as well as the solutions that sustainable farming can offer in the face of multiple emerging challenges.

New farms incorporated

This year, in addition to the regular visits to Algendaret Nou, the programme has expanded the activity to two more holdings: Santa Cecília and Son Felip. This expansion makes it possible to diversify the educational content and reach an even larger number of students.

The expansion has been made possible thanks to the support of Menorca Preservation and Fundació Far. It is important to highlight that this activity is offered free of charge to schools, including bus transport, thanks to the collaboration of the funders. In 2025, the activity has also received support from the European Union’s Reinforcing programme.
