Custòdia Agrària grows with more organic fruit

Custòdia Agrària, GOB Menorca’s agrarian stewardship programme, expands with the incorporation of Hort de Son Trémol. Located in the municipality of Es Migjorn Gran, Hort de Son Trémol is a five-hectare orchard of fruit trees that has organic certification. It is dedicated to the cultivation of various fruit tree varieties (apple, pear, peach, plum, loquat, apricot, doughnut peach, persimmon and citrus fruits, some of them local varieties).

Since February 2024, Pere Torres has been the farmer in charge of managing Hort de Son Trémol. This small orchard is located in the welcoming setting of the Son Boter ravine, where remnants of ancient channels from the Arab period and other old infrastructures that helped irrigate the orchards (ponds, old wells) can still be seen.

The beauty of the ravines also carries the vulnerability of being close to a watercourse, which today is often blocked by vegetation. For this reason, one of the supports that will be offered through the Agrarian Stewardship programme is assistance in carrying out maintenance work on the watercourse. We will also help with the purchase of productive trees, strengthening the biodiversity of the ecosystem to contribute to the natural control of pests, and implementing improvements in the marketing of certain products.

Pere distributes his fruit through the delivery network of other farmers, and his products can also be found in organic food shops such as Sa Cooperativa de San Crispin, Ca na Clara, Camamil·la, Tot a granel, Biomagatzem or Econatur.

The Agrarian Stewardship agreements

Signing an Agrarian Stewardship agreement between GOB Menorca and the farm managers represents the establishment of a mutual aid pact based on a shared vision of the agricultural future: a resilient and sustainable model.

For their part, farmers commit to acting as true stewards of the land, managing it with respect for nature. GOB, as a counterpart and in recognition of their work, channels support through different means. This includes, among other actions, supporting farmers in training and advisory services, direct actions on farms (to promote regenerative agriculture practices, habitat and biodiversity conservation, etc.), product promotion, as well as disseminating the work carried out by farmers both to increase social recognition of their activity and to promote environmental education activities that introduce rural life to those who will be adults in the future.
