The fourth and final round table in the «Viure dins del dònut» [«Living within the doughnut»] debate series at the Ateneu de Maó will focus on waste management. This genuine collective challenge is a key element in moving towards more sustainable and responsible models. The session will address the future prospects of island waste management, the role of the three Rs —reduce, reuse and recycle— and innovative local upcycling initiatives.
In a context in which waste generation and its proper management have become one of the major environmental and social challenges, the meeting aims to contribute to an open debate on shared responsibilities and opportunities for transformation towards a more circular economy.
The invited experts will frame the discussion from different perspectives, through contributions focused on specific aspects of the issue:
- “Medium-term prospects for island waste management”, by Cati Pascual, technician at the Menorca Waste Consortium.
- “The three Rs: Reduce, Recycle, Reuse”, with Gonçal Seguí, former president of Local Agenda 21 of Es Castell.
- “Neighbourhood upcycling”, by Marc Bassó, Director of the Technological Outreach Area of CIM-UPC.
The session will be moderated by Sergi Marí, coordinator of GOB Menorca.
This year’s series of round tables at the Ateneu has focused on the concept of Doughnut Economics, formulated by British economist Kate Raworth. Raworth proposes a rethinking of the economic model to guarantee a dignified life for all without exceeding the planet’s ecological limits.
As with the rest of the sessions in the series, the debate can also be followed online through the Ateneu de Maó’s YouTube channel.
The series of talks is organised by the Ateneu de Maó, Menorca Preservation and GOB Menorca, with the support of Maó Town Council and the Island Council of Menorca.
