Formentera rejoins the structure of GOB in the Balearic Islands.

The Inter-island Board of GOB of the Balearic Islands, composed of representatives from GOB Mallorca, GOB Menorca, GEN-GOB, and GOB Formentera, met this Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Can Casals (Ibiza), the headquarters of GEN-GOB, for their annual interisland coordination meeting.

The most notable news from this meeting, which all the island sections of the Balearic environmental organisation celebrated with great joy, is the resurgence of GOB Formentera, which thus rejoined the interisland structure after nearly 20 years of inactivity.

The main point of agreement was the imperative and urgent need for all public institutions to finally assume the unavoidable challenge of setting limits on tourist overcrowding and the consequent consumption of resources. Despite public statements made, no approved measure goes in this direction—on the contrary. One need only mention Law 7/2024, the PROHENS LAW, which definitively condemns our rural land.

Other topics discussed included feral cat colonies: each island section will carry out awareness campaigns aimed at private owners and responsible institutions—namely, the town councils—so that they take the necessary measures to advance in reducing the impact of feral cats on biodiversity. GOB is aware that some councils are already launching campaigns in this regard, but measures must go beyond the urban area, since it is in natural areas where most predation occurs.

Regarding waste, all sections agree that urgent reduction in waste production is needed, and that awareness and prevention policies must be implemented. Bold reduction policies are needed and demanded—policies that are already being successfully implemented in other places, such as door-to-door collection, mandatory separate collection of textiles, etc., which would allow us to reach the targets of 90% reduction or 10% residual waste. Not everything should be incinerated or shipped elsewhere.
