October 11 – II Regenerative Aquaculture Seminar

Climate change and the need to preserve the coastline compel us to find resilient and sustainable alternatives. The Regenerative Aquaculture Seminar returns in 2025 to continue raising these questions and how to address them in a place such as Menorca.

What is regenerative aquaculture? Are there precedents of this activity in Menorca? Is it possible to make marine activity compatible with a sustainable model? The second edition of the Aquaculture Seminar will address these and other questions, with the participation of experts and professionals in the sector to share knowledge, experiences, and proposals that may help define the future of coastal management that is more respectful of marine ecosystems and society.

The port of Maó is a natural port with high ecological values. However, the conservation of this very special environment has not always been a priority.

Regenerative aquaculture offers the possibility of ensuring local economic production while protecting the environment, contributing to the regeneration of marine habitats, and diversifying the port’s economy. Encouraging other economic activities can help provide alternatives to conventional fishing, which faces major challenges such as resource depletion and climate change.
The seminar aims to make this practice known, to approach traditional activities from a historical perspective, and to provide a practical vision that inspires new initiatives.

Speakers and topics

The event will take place on Saturday, October 11. The first part, with two lectures, will be held at the Museu de Menorca.

The Seminar will be inaugurated by Adolf Sintes Carreras, historian specialized in ethnology and traditional heritage, with the lecture “Shellfishing in the port of Maó. A valuable historical heritage with great future potential.”

The second lecture will focus on a practical and successful case: the experience and knowledge of researcher Raül Golo, co-founder of the company Algabrava. His presentation, entitled “Innovating in seaweed farming for sustainability and blue growth,” will showcase the latest studies and seaweed aquaculture projects being developed in the Mediterranean.

After lunch, we will learn about aquaculture firsthand, led by shellfisher Paco González. We will take a boat trip to the mussel farms and, back on land, the final speaker will explain the characteristics of shellfish production and share his vision.
