A Step Forward for the Menorca Agroecological Alliance: Collaborative project workshop

The Alliance for Agroecology in Menorca is organising a Project Definition Workshop next Thursday, 19 February, at CentreBit Menorca (Av. des Camp Verd, 4, in Alaior), with the aim of opening up the participatory process launched a year ago and bringing new people and organisations into the transformation of Menorca’s agricultural sector towards a more sustainable, fair and territory-rooted model.

After a first year of work driven by a small core group, the Alliance wants to take a step forward and broaden the project’s social base. Promoting the agroecological transition — which links agricultural production and nature conservation — is a collective challenge that requires everyone’s involvement.

From soil to seed – 2nd Session of the 2026 Agriculture and Environment Seminar

The final session of the 2026 Agriculture and Environment Seminar, to be held in the audience hall of the Claustre del Carme on 7 February in Maó, will focus on the role of knowledge — scientific, traditional and applied — as a driver of transformation in the agricultural model. The presentations will address, from complementary perspectives, how recent advances in the study and management of soil, on the one hand, and, on the other, the recovery of wild edible plants and traditional varieties, can contribute to strengthening biodiversity, food sovereignty and the economic viability of the primary sector.

Two presentations that will outline a horizon in which research, farming and territory converge to move towards a more sustainable, resilient and locally rooted agriculture through concrete and contextualised experiences and data.

The Agenda Game

Despite all the countless declarations of love for the land, there are still initiatives in Menorca’s rural areas that consistently seek maximum real estate returns, at the risk of significantly altering the island’s territorial reality.

A territory that, we were told, had captivated developers precisely because it was well-preserved. Yet influential figures keep pushing limits, even when projects would be profitable with fewer interventions, or when investors already have ample financial capacity.

Custòdia Agrària, GOB Menorca’s land stewardship programme, closes the year with an agreement with Torralba Petit, an olive oil production farm. The estate, covering 5 hectares and located in Alaior, has one thousand olive trees, mainly of the Arbequina and Coratina varieties. In addition, the farm includes a plot with two hundred olive trees from fifty different varieties originating from different countries around the Mediterranean basin.

The Torralba Petit farm is jointly run by Manuel Martínez Corroza, who holds a degree in Business Administration, is a graduate in Olive Growing and the landowner, and Bernat Pons Durà, an agricultural technician and the farm’s farmer. One of the main objectives is to combine organic olive oil production with nature conservation. To achieve this, efforts are made to keep the soil covered with vegetation, preserve small wooded areas, create water points to enhance biodiversity, and control pests using natural methods that replace the use of agrotoxins.

A new urban planning threat is being proposed on rural land in Menorca, presented as essential agricultural buildings to save the island’s countryside. Enormous building projects are being proposed with requests for exemption from urban planning parameters, so they can fall outside the scope of current regulations. These will be agricultural buildings… as long as the activity lasts.

Currently open to public consultation is a project for a large winery in Ciutadella, on the Camí de Macarella. It is planned on specially protected land and within an area of High Fire Risk. It is undergoing processing to be declared of General Interest. GOB has submitted objections.
