The will to have more tools to face aggressive projects against the territory and its environmental values has generated a strategic alliance now being launched in Menorca. The RADA association and GOB have agreed to create a joint legal front.
RADA (Red de Abogados y Abogadas de Defensa Ambiental) is a national network of professionals who share resources and information to help each other in their work defending the environment—a group of environmental law specialists willing to help preserve the island.
The current scenario of environmental pressure, as well as the environmental and urban deregulation that Menorca is suffering, makes it necessary to strengthen legal advice to prevent irreversible damage.
To the regional legislative changes (urban amnesty in rural land, elimination of the Environmental Commission, positive silence for new constructions, etc.) are added the announcements of modifications to the Island Territorial Plan and numerous projects currently being processed.
In this context, the aim is to promote a stable, strategic, and committed legal alliance called Legal Front for the Environmental Defence of Menorca. This initiative seeks to provide organised citizens with rigorous and effective legal tools that can influence the most relevant administrative and judicial procedures, articulating responses that combine technical and legal knowledge with the active defence of the public interest.
RADA lawyers will help GOB to strengthen the legal presentation of allegations, administrative appeals and, if necessary, judicial litigation. The goal is to foster a “culture of environmental legality”, combining technique, cooperation and purpose, to build trust and open paths towards fairer and more lasting protection of the territory.
These will be professional services under contract, but within a broader agreement that will allow the availability of advisory lawyer teams and also voluntary work.
Work will cover various fields such as land use planning, water, ports, environmental impact, access to environmental information, and others that will be assessed.
People who wish to support this new initiative for the island’s defence can do so by donating here (please specify that it is for the Legal Front). The contributions will go to a specific fund created to cover the expenses that may arise.
GOB trusts that the agreement with RADA, a pioneering initiative in Spai, will increase Menorca’s conservation possibilities and also serve as an experience that could be extended to other territories in the future.
