Towards an agroecological transition: a new alliance in Menorca

During February, GOB Menorca’s Land Stewardship team, the San Crispín Cooperative, and Rayën Agronomic Solutions organized several meetings aimed at promoting an alliance for the agroecological transition of Menorca’s agricultural sector. These discussions culminated in an early March co-creation workshop, where the foundations for an agroecological transition alliance were established.

The process involved representatives from public administration, organizations, and key actors from the agricultural and commercial sectors. Through open, participatory, and cross-sector dialogue, key challenges were identified, and common perspectives were shared to lay the groundwork for the Alliance.

Core values of the alliance
  • Cooperation and commitment as fundamental pillars.
  • Resilience and diversity as aspirational goals.
  • Sustainability as the guiding principle and ultimate objective.
A vision for the future

The Alliance will work towards an agri-food model that regenerates the land and provides the population with healthy, locally sourced products. This vision is built upon:

  • Preserving landscapes and natural resources.
  • Ensuring economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
  • Reconnecting people with the agricultural sector.
A shared mission

The Alliance aims to unite efforts to drive this transition by:

  • Coordinating between agricultural stakeholders.
  • Mobilizing resources and supporting farmers.
  • Highlighting the role of farmers in land regeneration
Key areas of action

To achieve its objectives, the Alliance has identified five main areas of action:

  1. Collaboration – Strengthening cooperation among all stakeholders to improve the agricultural landscape of Menorca.
  2. Support & Training – Providing resources and education for a self-sufficient, regenerative farming sector.
  3. Innovation – Positioning Menorca as a pioneer in agroecological and regenerative farming.
  4. Market Access – Facilitating the commercialization of local, sustainable products and fostering consumer-producer commitment.
  5. Awareness & Outreach – Promoting the value of farming and sustainable agriculture across society

In the coming months, the Alliance will take shape and open the membership process.

With this initiative, Menorca takes another step toward an agricultural model that prioritizes sustainability, land regeneration, and the strengthening of the island’s primary sector.

This co-creation and collaboration process is part of the GOV4ALL project, funded by the Horizon Europe Program under the European Union’s Soil Mission.
