GOB has filed formal complaints regarding the discovery of uncontrolled poison near fire prevention facilities in Alaior. The potential impact on local wildlife in a protected area could constitute a criminal offense.
A few days ago, a local resident of Alaior reported the presence of multiple rodenticide sachets scattered along the Binixems path, surrounding a fire prevention water storage system. In addition to an existing circular tank, a new inflatable flexible cistern had recently been installed.
The rodenticide in question contains bromadiolone, a second-generation anticoagulant that causes a slow and painful death and can affect any animal that ingests it—directly or through the food chain.
The poisoned area is located within a Natural Area of Special Interest (ANEI) and is part of the EU Natura 2000 Network, specifically designated as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).
The use of indiscriminate poison is classified as a criminal offense under the Spanish Penal Code and may lead to prison sentences.
The facility in question is operated by the Balearic Government’s Directorate General for Natural Environment and Forest Management. For this reason, GOB has submitted a request to this department demanding:
- Identification of the maintenance personnel responsible for the facilities.
- Clarification on whether the Directorate has funded any rodenticide purchases.
- Initiation of an environmental liability investigation.
- Review of all similar facilities across the Balearic Islands to ensure this banned practice is not being repeated elsewhere.
A copy of the complaint has also been submitted to SEPRONA, the environmental branch of the Civil Guard.
