The urgency to take measures to stop the growing overcrowding from which Menorca has been suffering in the last few years has been the focus of GOB’s intervention at a Plenary session of the Consell Insular in March. The president of GOB, Margarida Masferrer, explained the problems that are being experienced and the worrying announcements that are heard from public institutions.

Vehicle Limit (2): the Formentera experience

Regulating the number of vehicles in the summer is a useful tool for combatting overcrowding. It has positive effects on the resident population and on the experience of all tourists to the island. Formentera paved the way in 2019 and obtained good results.

Here is a resumé as well as a video presentation made recently for the cycle of round table discussions “Menorca where are we going?” organised jointly by the Menorca Preservation Foundation, the Ateneo of Mahón and GOB.

An enormous lawned garden, a motorcross circuit and new buildings on rustic (rural) land

The unconventional behaviour of people with economic resources but no environmental principles is at risk. An important transformation on rustic ground has been reported by GOB to the Consortium of Urban Discipline (Consorci de disciplina urbanística) and to the Island Heritage Service (Servei insular de Patrimoni).

At a farm to the south of Mahon, construction has been observed of a tract of land of some 13,000 square meters and being made into a racing track for motorbike scramblers; the construction of new buildings; the creation of some 20,000 square meters of a lawned garden; and the destruction of hundreds of meters of dry stone walling, as well as possible damage to heritage elements.

Time to say Farewell

First of all, I would like to make a special mention in memory of our island coordinator, Tófol Mascaró, who died suddenly and without any warning. There are no words to express the void he has left and what he has meant to GOB and all Menorca. It is a loss difficult to assimilate both at a human level as well as professionally. Tófol will always be present in our memories. Continue reading Time to say Farewell
