Via Menorca is calling for a new action to protest against mass tourism and its severe consequences. The event will take place on Saturday, December 28th, at Conquesta Square in Maó.

Every year, the number of tourists in Menorca continues to rise. The growing human pressure on the island negatively impacts its iconic landscapes, water resources, energy consumption, and waste production. It also affects the social fabric, making access to housing increasingly unattainable, eroding neighborhood businesses, and driving up the overall cost of living.

Moreover, as the number of tourists grows, the per capita income decreases. Data shows that the Balearic Islands achieved higher per capita income levels with just one-third of today’s tourist numbers. In other words, when only a third of the current visitors came, the wealth was distributed much more equitably.

This growth model is unsustainable. It resembles an extractive economy that generates profits that do not stay on the island, leading to a decline in residents’ quality of life. Continuing to grow in this way can only mean a worsening of residents lives.

Adding to this, in 2025, the Island Council of Menorca plans to increase public funds for tourism promotion by 45%, while cutting subsidies for public transportation and failing to address housing issues. Funds are also being allocated to amend the Territorial Plan, which has been a cornerstone of preserving Menorca’s distinct way of life.

While Menorca’s unique landscapes, carefully preserved over time, are used to promote tourism, the reality is that visitors often find an overburdened island far removed from the idyllic postcards. This misleading image attracts excessive numbers of tourists, which no longer translates into wealth for the local population.

At GOB Menorca, we aim to challenge this destructive trend and advocate for a sustainable tourism model. That’s why we invite you to participate in the latest action organized by Via Menorca, a campaign focused on protests and proposals to carve out a better path for the island.

On December 28th, we need your help to create a human graphic that will send a powerful message to the world about what is happening here. Join us and bring anyone who also wishes for a better future for Menorca and its residents.
