September 24th: Family Workshop on the Dangers of Invasive Species at the Wildlife Recovery Center

This Tuesday, September 24th, at 5:30 PM, the Menorca Wildlife Recovery Center will host a family workshop aimed at raising awareness about the dangers that invasive species pose to native wildlife. This activity, marking the final event in the CRFS summer program, will focus on the stories of some exotic animals currently residing at the Center’s hospital, including iguanas and American and African turtles. Through educational games, participants will learn how these animals arrived in Menorca and the risks they pose to local ecosystems.

One of the highlighted stories will be that of Fausto, an African spurred tortoise found injured eleven years ago in Menorca after being hit by a vehicle. This case illustrates the severe consequences of the exotic pet trade, which not only endangers the lives of these animals but also threatens local ecosystems. When exotic species compete with native species for resources, act as disease vectors, or alter natural habitats, they become invasive species, causing significant negative impacts on local biodiversity. The workshop provides an opportunity to reflect on these issues in an engaging and educational way.

The Wildlife Recovery Center, located at the Pedreres de s’Hostal de Líthica, is open to the public Monday to Saturday from 5:30 PM until sunset. To visit, you must purchase an entrance ticket to Líthica, available online for €4 for residents and €7 for non-residents, with free admission for children under 13. Tickets can also be bought at the box office for an additional euro. Once inside, a €2 supplement is required to access the Center.
