For years, Cala Mitjana has been doubling or even tripling its maximum user capacity. Expanding the parking lot further degrades the natural area and diminishes the tourist experience of visiting this beautiful beach.

Cala en Turqueta Advocates for a New Path for Menorca

The Via Menorca campaign made history this past weekend by moving to a real beach: from Cala en Turqueta, we envisioned and organized a change of course for Menorca.

Early on Saturday morning, July 27th, a group of 250 people coordinated to meet at the parking lot of this beach, filling it with residents’ cars for about six hours. The gathering continued on the beach, where participants crafted various messages on the sand using towels and their own bodies. These images were used to convey to the world the concern of a significant portion of the Menorcan population about the island’s increasing overcrowding.

Petition for Unconstitutionality of the Omnibus Decree Law

Allowing construction in flood or fire risk areas again, legalizing buildings on rural land without meeting the minimum parameters set by territorial planning, and contradicting higher regulations through a Decree Law based on “extraordinary and urgent necessity” represents a substantial change in the legal conditions of the Balearic Islands’ territory. This arbitrary move creates significant discrimination among citizens.

Experiences from the 2024 Environmental Education Camps

Shortly after the summer solstice, we kicked off this year’s series of environmental camps! This year marked the first time we expanded to four consecutive camps, each tailored to a specific age group: small children, middle-aged children, teens, and a hiking expedition for young people.

Mongofra Nou, nestled within the Albufera des Grau Natural Park and the wild northern part of the island, provided an unparalleled setting for collective fun and learning about environmental values, respect, coexistence, and autonomy, all in constant contact with nature.

The Order of (Political) Factors

We live in strange times. People rent lounge chairs on the beach to avoid touching the sand. But when the beach ends up looking like a hard surface without sand, as it has this year at Sant Tomàs, no one wants to rent chairs. Then, the City Council considers moving them to Binigaus, a pristine beach where there are still sandy areas, with the goal that people can rent the chairs and thus not touch the sand. That’s the way the world is.

The Balearic Islands coordinate to change the current tourism model

Under the slogan “Change course: set limits on tourism,” the four Balearic islands are jointly working on a schedule of mobilizations and demands.

As a result of the public protests that have taken place in the archipelago, some coordination has been called for to deal with the multiple social, labour and ecological aspects of the all-consuming tourism expanding into every corner of these islands.
