This February, the Ateneu de Maó will host a series of round table discussions focused on resilience in the face of climate change. Organized by the Ateneu de Maó, Menorca Preservation, and GOB Menorca, this series will explore the ecological concept of resilience through concrete experiences in four key areas: agriculture, forest management, tourism development, and the marine environment. Through presentations, discussions, and open debates, the series will highlight strategies and solutions to tackle climate change effects—especially those that require urgent implementation on an island like Menorca, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The series consists of four sessions, held every Thursday in February at 7:30 PM at the Ateneu de Maó. Each session will feature experts from various disciplines who will share insights or present ongoing initiatives, aiming to foster a meaningful and realistic debate while providing concrete tools to address today’s environmental challenges.
The first two roundtables: Agriculture and Forestry
- February 6: The opening session will explore ways to combat the growing issues of drought and desertification through resilient actions, specifically focusing on soil protection and conservation.
- February 13: The discussion will shift to forest management, emphasizing the role of extensive livestock farming in reducing wildfire risks.
Tourism and Marine Governance in the Spotlight
- February 20: The session will examine resilience in tourism, showcasing cases and experiences of de-urbanization efforts.
- February 27: The final roundtable will present and discuss various participatory governance initiatives across the Balearic Islands aimed at sustainable marine management.
Addressing issues such as drought, wildfire risks, uncontrolled urbanization, and marine ecosystem degradation through adaptive and sustainable solutions is the core focus of these roundtables, co-organized with the support of the Maó City Council and the Island Council of Menorca.
The sessions will be streamed live via the Ateneu de Maó’s communication channels, allowing a wider audience to follow the discussions and participate in the Q&A sessions.
A special mention and heartfelt thanks from the three collaborating organizations go to graphic artist Juan Zacarias, “ZACA,” who contributed his talent to creating the illustration for the event’s promotional poster, visually representing the structure and organization of the discussions.
