Premi Pere Prats awarded on 19 November
GOB elected, unanimously, Antoni Carreras, to receive the Pere Prats Prize for initiating projects which combine social employment and the environment. Working with Caritas and during the economic crisis he recognised the importance of recycling clothes and goods at Mestral. He promoted the Algendar Tree project, creating work by the conservation, for example, of its ethnological walls, irrigation channels and agricultural structures in this special farming area, and also by the reintroduction and sale of Menorcan fruit trees boosting commercial ecological cultivation. GOB has made a formal complaint to SEPRONA (Guardia Civil Police) and the Environmental Agencies of a new case of a falcon wounded by a shotgun and which has recently been taken into the Wild Life Recuperation Centre. It is the fourth one in the last few years brought in for this reason. This year it is the second case of a protected species coming as a result of impacted pellets. The building of a new sewage plant in Ferreries, to replace the anaerobic lagoon that has worked until now, has exposed a problem which has been building up for many years. Sludge from the old installation was full of heavy metal making a dangerously toxic residue. The current situation has had a long and non-restrictive history.
