The Torralba farm, to the south of Ciutadella, was one of the first farms for agritourism but it has taken all the existing buildings for tourism and not left any for agricultural use. A vineyard has been planted. Now a project has been put forward for wine cellars erecting eight new industrial sized buildings. The case raises the question whether to put limits on new agricultural buildings or whether to depend only on an external report contracted by the promoters. The idea of making independent groups but with the same methodology for adopting sections of the Menorcan coast has had an excellent response. Menorca Sense Plàstic (Plastic Free Menorca) is an alliance between the Menorca Preservation Fund, the Institut Menorquí d’Estudis, GOB Menorca, the Associació Leader Illa de Menorca and Per la Mar Viva.

GOB has started a programme for adopting beaches that is aimed at groups of volunteers who want to help clean up the plastics affecting the sea and shoreline. The programme was started as a participatory social project in which volunteer groups commit to taking charge of a beach or a section of the coastline for a minimum number of times each year. Even though the activities are mainly focussed on the cleaning up and collecting of rubbish, they will also be given knowledge and methodologies for collecting scientific information and protocols for the notification of any occurrences that they might come across. Despite the strange summer that we are living through, the animal hospital has had a good number of visitors so that we have extended the weeks for visiting to more than had been originally organised. One of the objectives of the Land Stewardship Scheme is to contribute to preserving the fertility of the land. This is basic not only for the life of the soil, but also for the productivity and economic viability of agricultural exploitation. Despite this central importance, land health is frequently forgotten.
The techniques for regenerating agriculture are based on putting the health of the soil at the centre of farm management. The Land Stewardship Scheme has promoted a series of pilot tests in three member farms to study the suitability of some of these techniques for the Mediterranean climate and in the context of Menorcan countryside. The increase in the number of moorings and anchorages is a severe threat. GOB is calling on the Balearic Ports Authority to conduct scientific studies to assess areas that have special protection.
