Excursion on foot next sunday 4 October

After many months of rest, this next Sunday, 4 October, another “excursion on foot” has been organised to visit a beautiful part of the countryside and to include seeing the renovation which has been made of a well known water cistern. We will walk in the area of two gullies which feed into Son Bou.

Meet in the car park of Son Bou at 9.30 am. The walk will start at 10 am. The excursion on foot will finish at Daia Vell. Itinerary will include spectacular views. It is a guided walk especially to see the renovated water cistern. The walk is of mixed difficulty (the path is easy but the first part is a little bit of a struggle). A bus will return everyone to the beginning of the walk and will cost 3 euros each. The estimated time of the end of the walk is 13.30.

GOB matters is a section of Roqueta, a monthly magazine in English, written by Chita Laurie.

GOB Menorca is the association which promotes responsible ecological management for the island. It brings to the attention of the public proposals which could adversely affect its integrity and character upsetting the island’s ecology and its economic viability. Many thousands of people have been brought together to protest against the disproportionate works proposed for the main road between Mahon and Ciutadella. Once the works started, many more people clamoured to have them halted, to think again before the island’s uniqueness was lost and before millions of euros were misspent on megaroundabouts quite out of keeping for a small island. GOB matters is a section of Roqueta, a monthly magazine in English, written by Chita Laurie.

GOB, or Grupo Balear d’Ornitologia y Defensa de la Naturalesa, is the Balearic organisation which is concerned with the care of the environment, and gives voice to those who wish to support its principles in matters of public interest. To that end, participation in public outcries against the unnecessary roundabouts taking up so much land, against the petroleum prospecting causing damage to the ecology and to tourism, against illegal building, and much more helps to keep Minorca as part of the Reserve of the Biosphere, a UNESCO honorific awarded in 1993. The Works to the Main Road

Naturally, everyone is hoping that the newly elected Council will be able to redirect the works to the main road between Mahon and Ciutadella and not go ahead with unnecessary and inappropriate macroroundabouts. At the time of writing the Council has agreed to halt the building of the roundabouts for the summer. Continue reading GOB matters. August 2015

GOB cares for the environment and for this island, especially. It gives voice to all those people who feel disempowered with no say in important local government decisions that affect the character and purpose of the island and its unique nature. For some time, many people in the general public as well as institutions have watched with horror the excesses of the works to the main road between Mahon and Ciutadella and can now see how disproportionate the plans for roundabouts are on this small and essentially country island. Visitors love its tranquillity, its virgin beaches, its country walks as well as the sports of both sea and land. They come to get away from the hustle and bustle of cities and the endless horror of motorways. Locals and visitors alike are shocked at the threat to the honorific of Reserve of the Biosphere by such an unnecessary attack to the countryside. Continue reading GOB matters. July 2015

The Road works between Mahόn and Alaior

One day, this matter will be over and will not take up the time and energy which could be devoted to other subjects. The main purpose of mentioning it this time is to explain the inability of GOB to proceed with a legal case against the Consell regarding the environmental damage of the proposed outsized and unnecessary roundabouts. Justice is expensive and has been made more so by a manouvre on the part of the Consell of legal procedure on which the legal costs are based. Continue reading GOB matters. June 2015

Work on the Road between Mahόn and Alaior

GOB announced earlier in April that the Consell, out of respect for Menorca’s Talayotic inheritance and its candidature for World Heritage status, had abandoned the idea of making macro-roundabouts on the road between Alaior and Mahόn in the preservation area of rustic land. Instead, it had decided to redesign the two existing half built cement structures and combine modern with ancient materials by placing prehistoric flagstones on top of them as a reminder of Menorca’s prehistoric culture. (See attached photograph.) Apparently, the flagstones were found nearly a year ago when making the enlargements to Es Mila. And the Consell also promised to collaborate with the zoo and the adjoining farms that use ecologically sustainable methods in the area to make a theme park on sustainability which would certainly be of great value to tourism. GOB matters is a section of Roqueta, a monthly magazine in English, written by Chita Laurie.

GOB is the acronym for its Catalan name, Grup Balear d’Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa founded in Mallorca in 1973 and in Menorca in 1977. It is a non-profit making non-governmental organisation which exists to care for the environment and to increase public awareness on ecological matters. As it is non-political it gives a democratic voice to the population against government actions that are often unnecessary and are contrary to keeping the important balance between man and the environment.
