Objections to jet ski project at Sant Tomàs beach

Jet skis are the basis of an activity that frequently generates complaints. They tend to be noisy, can pose a danger to swimmers, and have a high potential to impact the marine environment. GOB has submitted objections to a facility currently under administrative review, planned for installation in front of Sant Tomàs beach.

The project, which has recently entered the public consultation phase, consists of a floating platform offering high-powered jet skis—with engines reaching up to 155 HP—and proposes operations extending 10 km to the east and 10 km to the west, covering approximately 20 kilometres of coastline.

In this regard, GOB has warned that the proposal involves an intensive offer that would affect several protected areas, from the Marine Site of Community Interest (SCI) in the Menorca Channel to the various protected areas along the adjacent coastline.

It is therefore understood that a prior declaration of environmental compatibility is required from the competent authorities responsible for Natura 2000, both at the state and regional levels. Additionally, according to current legislation, a simplified environmental assessment must be processed before the Balearic Government.

In view of the safety concerns and disturbances to swimmers, potential noise impacts on cliffs where protected bird species nest, and possible negative effects of persistent vibrations on the marine environment, GOB has requested that, if the activity is authorised, it is conditioned to a minimum distance of 500 metres from the coastline and the imposition of maximum speed limits.

Likewise, guarantees have been requested regarding fuel management – including clarification on where it will be stored and what systems are planned to control potential spills into the sea during refuelling.
