Even before spring officially begins, Es Viver – Plantes de Menorca already has a good range of plants available for your gardens. The first of the season are aromatic plants, which bring much more than fragrance to gardens and terraces.
The presence of aromatic plants favours biodiversity, as they attract pollinating insects and contribute to the ecological balance of the environment. In addition, they offer multiple possibilities of use — culinary, ornamental and traditional — and allow the creation of living, sensory and low-maintenance spaces, fully integrated into the Menorcan landscape. In particular, Es Viver wishes to highlight the chamomile of Menorca or of Maó (Santolina magonica), a true jewel of Balearic flora.
Endemic to Menorca and Mallorca, this plant forms spectacular yellow cushions during the flowering season and grows naturally in rocky coastal environments. Chamomile belongs to the daisy family — which means that the “flower” we see is actually a set of tiny florets, called a capitulum, forming yellow cushions during flowering.
A social economy project in favour of responsible gardening
Es Viver – Plantes de Menorca of GOB Menorca is not only a plant nursery. In addition to being a clear commitment to responsible, resilient gardening consistent with the territory, it is a social economy project. It operates thanks to a small professional team and an active volunteer group that contributes its time and effort to make the initiative viable.
As of today, Es Viver is launching on its social media channels (Facebook and Instagram) a regular series of posts focusing on a native or environmentally friendly plant. The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness of Menorca’s botanical richness, as well as plants well adapted to the island’s natural conditions, capable of growing vigorously without the need for constant artificial inputs.
With this small action on social media, Es Viver aims to showcase and value the type of plants it usually offers: species selected for their resistance to the Mediterranean climate, especially drought and wind, and for minimising maintenance tasks. In addition, they are usually longer-living species, requiring little water to develop, not needing additives or intensive treatments, and produced locally.
Es Viver – Plantes de Menorca is located on the Airport road, on the road to the Maó waste disposal site, and is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9 am to 1.30 pm.
