Four civic organisations have joined forces to present a document with management proposals for the Port of Maó, aimed at putting a stop to the environmental, heritage and social conflicts taking place there. Next Thursday, the 5th, at 7 pm, the document will be presented to the public with a talk by Joan Alemany and interventions from the four associations. The event will take place at the Ateneu de Maó.

In recent decades, the pressure of tourist activity has grown rapidly in the Port of Maó. The dynamics and pace of growth threaten to fully colonise port spaces, both on land and at sea.

The historical heritage of small buildings and singular maritime elements, traditional boats, residents’ access to boating, and the natural values of the area are clearly in decline and in real danger of disappearing in the near future.

For these reasons, Amics de la Mar-Port Maó, Casetes de vorera de Menorca, Associació d’amarraments públics Es Jonquet and GOB Menorca consider it essential to thoroughly review the fragile and significant elements of the port and, at the same time, place public interest, the preservation of small-scale heritage and marine ecosystems, as well as the social use of the port by citizens, at the centre.

The document “Recuperem el port de Maó” warns about this cross-cutting problem, but it does not only do that. It also includes a broad inventory of historical and natural heritage values, on which a series of management proposals are based.

The organisations are calling on citizens to demand a new approach that moves away from exclusive commodification and helps recover the port as a common good.
