New call to curb touristic overcrowding in Menorca

A huge thank you to the more than 500 people who gathered in the streets of Maó to demand a change of course for our island.

Every April, as the tourist season begins, we witness the same spiral of resource consumption, overcrowding, and traffic congestion from tourist vehicles. Our protest campaigns continue because, even after another year, we are still waiting for effective action from the Island Council of Menorca to prevent a growing collapse.

This weekend, a colorful and musical “Traffic Jam Parade” filled the streets of Maó with a clear and simple message: STOP TOURIST VEHICLES.

It was highlighted that, since 2023, the Biosphere Reserve Law allows Menorca to limit the number of tourist vehicles entering the island, but the Island Council continues to look the other way. Once again, the streets of the capital were filled with a spirit of defense and resilience. This call to action is essential for Menorca to continue on a path of conservation and to improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

For years, Menorca has suffered the consequences of overcrowding and congestion, especially during the high season: beaches that must close vehicle access due to overcapacity, villages where finding parking is increasingly difficult. This is not just an urgent and important call — change is in our hands.

The message that echoed through the city is clear: apply the legal framework that empowers us to implement containment measures. Formentera is already doing so, and Mallorca and Ibiza are moving forward with their own regulations.
The market will never regulate tourist pressure on its own — it must be Menorcan society that takes action.

Overcrowding is growing year after year. Ignoring the issue will only worsen the problems and damage Menorca’s image. We must keep working to ensure that Menorca retains its unique and sustainable identity.
