Cristòfol Mascaró Sintes has been unanimously chosen by the Board of Directors of GOB Menorca as the winner of the Pere Prats Environmental Award 2025, posthumously.
With this recognition, GOB Menorca wishes to acknowledge and make visible the work of a biologist considered one of Menorca’s best botanists in recent decades. Tòfol Mascaró was an expert on Menorca’s biodiversity and its conservation, as well as a great connoisseur and promoter of the island’s natural heritage, with remarkable teaching skills.
For years, he successfully balanced family life, scientific activity, and concern for the conservation of the natural environment. His commitment to the island led him to serve as GOB Menorca’s island coordinator from 2009 until his passing at the end of 2023. He was one of those people who carry out their work discreetly yet effectively and consistently, and through these qualities and his kindness, he gently inspired others to become committed and to love Menorca’s natural environment.
His passion was nature in all its forms and diversity, and especially its conservation. He was fully aware that this goal is only achievable through strong public awareness based on solid scientific knowledge.
Mascaró was a communicator, educator, and nature photographer, as well as an excellent connoisseur of the natural environment and a promoter of numerous projects. He was also an active member of the Botany Commission within the Institut Menorquí d’Estudis, and a lover of the fascinating world of fungi. As a photographer, he leaves behind an immense legacy of images that have illustrated many books and educational publications.
The award will be presented at a public ceremony on Saturday, 15 November, at 7 p.m. at the Molí del Rei Hall in Maó. Everyone is invited to attend and share this moment to pay a well-deserved tribute to Tòfol Mascaró.
