Menorca’s water selected for common good urbanism initiative

The work carried out by GOB Menorca in relation to the water problem in Menorca has been selected as one of the cases that will benefit from the technical advisory support of n’UNDO, a team of professionals from architecture, urban planning, engineering and the social sciences. The defence of territory often has to face opponents with many resources. For citizen initiatives to have viable options, strategic alliances and high-level technical arguments, developed with rigour and solidity, are needed.

The n’UNDO team has recently launched a call at state level to promote a collective action oriented towards urbanism for the common good. The aim is to encourage citizen support that will allow the organisation of technical teams to help initiatives that defend territory against harmful or unsustainable urban development projects.

The case of freshwater resources in Menorca is an example of exceeding the carrying capacity of a territory. The main aquifers (des Migjorn and s’Albaida) have shown a downward trend for years, but this is not being translated into urban containment.

Along the Menorcan coast there are still many plots classified as developable that have not yet been built on and for which there will in reality be no water available. The revision of the Island Territorial Plan of Menorca announced last summer, far from redirecting the problem, aimed to further increase the island’s tourist accommodation places.

To face this senseless path, citizen organisation is needed, but also technical support. GOB presented the case to n’UNDO, and it has been selected at state level as one of the topics that will benefit from their technical support.

To make the different selected cases viable, n’UNDO has opened a crowdfunding campaign. Anyone who wishes to lend a hand by contributing funds to build this technical team that supports sound urban planning can do so by clicking here.
