Next Monday, April 14, at 6:30 p.m., the GOB Menorca office in Maó will host the presentation of Cogitacions – Guaitant el món des de la meva talaia (Cogitations – Observing the World from My Watchtower), the latest book by Catalan biologist and science communicator Joandomènec Ros.
Well known for his contributions to marine ecology and environmental protection, Ros returns in this new work to some of the core themes explored in his previous writings—such as research, education, culture, and the environment. However, Cogitacions takes on a more personal tone than before, as the author reflects and offers opinions on a wide array of topics. Books, comics, science magazines, horoscopes, denialism and fake news, religions, notable figures in science and culture, and recollections from both academic and personal life all weave together in this thoughtful and eclectic collection.
Joandomènec Ros holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Barcelona, where he has been Professor of Ecology since 1986 (now Emeritus Professor). He has served as head of the Ecology Departments at both the University of Barcelona and the University of Murcia. His main area of research focuses on the biology and ecology of marine benthic organisms and communities, on which he has published over a hundred scientific articles and a dozen books.
Beyond his academic research, Ros has been active in the fields of nature conservation and general ecology and is the author of numerous popular science essays. He has been a member of various advisory bodies and scientific committees, director of the Catalan Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity (IEC–Government of Catalonia), and rector of the Catalan Summer University. From 2005 to 2021, he also served as president of the Institute for Catalan Studies.
