On Saturday, May 3, you have the opportunity to explore an emblematic area of the Menorcan coast. We will visit the Concepció estate, under a Custòdia Agrària land stewardship agreement since 2020. The activity, which will take place in the morning, costs €10 and includes guided tour and return bus transport. Prior registration is required through this link.
Located at the end of the bay of Fornells, these artisanal salt flats were built in the 19th century to produce salt in Menorca. They ceased operations in the late 1980s and have recently been restored. The visit will allow us to learn about the workings of a traditional and sustainable salt production system.
We will also take the opportunity to present GOB Menorca’s new children’s book, “En Kaleu i na Hima, dos cames de jonc”, which is inspired precisely by this very special place. The story invites us to discover life in the salt flats through the eyes of two small protagonists: a pair of black-winged stilts that spend the spring and summer seasons there. These beautiful birds, which find their ideal habitat in wetlands, will be present at the Salines at the time of the excursion.
The meeting point is at 9:30 a.m., with the walk starting at 10 a.m. The route passes through a wooded area, following the Camí de Cavalls, and covers a distance of about 4.5 km. Upon arrival at the salt flats, we will enjoy a guided visit to the production area. Finally, there will be a tasting of salt, bread, and olive oil from other Land Stewardship farms. You will also have the opportunity to purchase the book and the salt on site. At the end of the visit, we will return by bus to the starting point.
The Land Stewardship Programme supports productive initiatives that embrace a model based on environmental sustainability. With these excursions, we aim to bring the reality of Menorca’s productive farms closer to the public and to highlight those producers who take care of the island’s landscape and nature.
If you would like to learn more about the programme, we recommend watching the following video, which offers a brief overview of the initiative; you can also view the impact videos that show in more detail the actions we promote.
This activity is supported by the Island Council of Menorca and the Menorca Preservation Fund.
