Just a year ago, S’Hortet de s’Algar was born on a plot of land in eastern Menorca that had long been abandoned. With passion and hard work, this project has flourished into a thriving, sustainable farm producing healthy food while caring for both the land and the people.
Now, S’Hortet de s’Algar has joined the Custòdia Agrària program of GOB Menorca, committing to farming without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers through regenerative agriculture techniques. The farm is currently in a transition period, awaiting its official organic certification.
The goal is to introduce new farming practices that improve the economic viability of the farm while preserving natural values. Some of these measures include:
- Mobile chicken coops for controlled grazing
- Semi-permanent raised beds for improved soil health
- Use of natural mulching materials
- Homemade liquid fertilizers
- Crop diversification with fig trees, capers, physalis, and aromatic plants
The farm offers home delivery of fresh produce baskets on Wednesdays and Fridays in the eastern part of the island. In the future, they plan to expand direct sales at markets and on-site.
S’Hortet de s’Algar is also part of various sustainable farming initiatives, including APAEM, ADV, and CBPAE, and is actively building a network of learning and collaboration with other farms in the GOB Menorca’s land stewardship program.
By choosing products from farms committed to the Custòdia Agrària program, you support farmers working towards a balance between economic activity and environmental conservation.
