Margarida Masferrer, linked with the medical world, is taking over from Carlos Coll as the President of GOB Menorca. The Assembly was opened with a deeply felt remembrance for the recent loss of Tòfol Mascaró, who has been Coordinator of the Island Association.

Masferrer has taken part as a member of the Board of Directors during the last few years. As the daughter of a Menorcan mother, she spent all her childhood summers here, where later she would practice first as a general doctor then as a paediatrician. As a candidate for the new president, she was voted unanimously following a huge ovation to Carlos Coll who has held the position for six years.

GOB celebrated this annual general meeting on Wednesday 27 December where the activities carried out are reviewed, the budget for the following year is approved and half the Board of Directors is renewed.

In 2023 GOB registered 105 new members, practically two a week. Its economy is healthy and it ended the year with 1,560 members, as well as a large number of volunteers.

The meeting stated the multiple activities that have taken place in the different areas of work (see report): Territorial Planning; Environmental Education; Land Stewardship Scheme; Centre for Wildlife Recuperation; Nursery Garden for autochthonous plants; Marine Environment; books and shops have all shown an important dynamic.

2024 is faced with new challenges such as how to deal with the overcrowding of Menorca, the difficulties of urban transparency, the strategic decisions to make as a society over the question of water, the agricultural adaptations to climate change and the economic context, as well as a long list of other initiatives that are to be promoted.
